Macallan 10 years sherry late 80's

This sample of Macallan Cask Strength 10 Years supposedly comes from a late 80s bottle. I couldn’t find a timeline of when this whisky started showing up in-market, but I always thought it was the early 90s. The buddy who gave me this sample knows his whisky so I’m going to assume he’s correct in his dating which means we’ve gone back yet another decade in our three-glass-exploration of Cask Strength Mac.

There’s not much to say about this I haven’t already. It’s Macallan, it was aged for 10 years in 100% Oloroso casks and it’s obviously awesome. On to the Macallan Cask Strength 10 Years review!

Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask / Year of the Ox

It may be hard to imagine today, but for much of the 20th century, Macallan was primarily a constituent malt in blends. It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.

The Double Cask from Macallan was introduced in 2018 as part of the newly revamped core range, alongside the Sherry Oak Cask and Triple Cask lines. This variant is matured in a mixture of sherry seasoned American Oak and European Oak casks.

The bottle is presented in limited edition Year of the Ox packaging.
