Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt 17, 21 and 25 Year Old Whisky Set

Japanese whisky brand Nikka has confirmed it will discontinue its Taketsuru Pure Malt 17-, 21- and 25-year-old whiskies, and will replace its no-age-statement (NAS) Taketsuru Pure Malt with a new expression.

The Asahi Breweries-owned Japanese whisky maker will delist all four whiskies in all markets in March, leaving just a strictly allocated amount of bottles available in select markets.

Emiko Kaji, international business development manager at Asahi Breweries, said: “We, Asahi Breweries Ltd in Tokyo, the parent company of Nikka whisky, would like to inform that we have decided to delist Taketsuru Pure Malt 17-year-old, 21-year-old and 25-year-old, and that Taketsuru Pure Malt (NAS) will also be discontinued with the launch of a new NAS.

Nikka Taketsuru 21 Year Old Pure Malt

Nikka Taketsuru 21 years Old Pure Malt. Taketsuru is a Japanese blended Pure Malt, named after the founder of the distillery, and legend in the Japanese whisky business, Masataka Taketsuru. This is an early style bottling, donning a gold chain around the neck, with the old style decanter bottle.

Nikka 12 years

The Nikka 12 is a blend of malt and grain whiskies from Nikka’s Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries in Japan. Released in 2014, this commemorated Nikka’s 80th anniversary. The bottle itself is also magnificent. It features a large wood stopper and beautiful glass work that pays homage to the Japan’s famous kimonos. The gold lettering completes the look that reminds you that what you are drinking is something special. I picked this up on one of my trips to Japan in 2017.

Nikka gold and gold samurai edition

While this is technically a shelf review, it’s likely you’ll never notice this particular bottle between the Toki or Hibiki Harmony. That’s because this is a Tokyo travel retail exclusive and is supposedly found only in either Narita or Haneda airports. This bottle features intricate metal clad samurai armor adorning the bottle and a blended whisky from Nikka inside.

This bold and distinctive single malt whisky was distilled and matured at the Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido, birthplace of Nikka Whisky. The Yoichi distillery continues to adhere to techniques such as the use of coal-fired pot stills, and otherwise remains loyal to the whisky-making traditions dating back to its foundation.
